Vision RT Celebrates Fifth King’s / Queen’s Award for Enterprise
On 21 October, 2026 Vision RT celebrated receiving its fifth King’s / Queen’s Award for Enterprise, earlier this year, holding a small ceremony at its London headquarters commemorating the event.
In attendance was MHC Russell Esq MBE DL FCT, Representative Deputy Lieutenant for the London Borough of Barnet, who gave a short speech before officially handing over the prize to Dr Norman Smith, CEO, representing Vision RT.
“In the 20 years that I’ve been privileged to be involved, I don’t know of anyone who has won an award of any kind, five times from the King.” said Lord Lieutenant Russell, “It’s a rare award to win in any event, but five times is quite extraordinary.”
Dr Smith, thanking the Lord Lieutenant for the award, spoke about the shared contribution of the entire Vision RT team since the company’s founding, 25 years ago. “As we celebrate this award, we are also celebrating 25 years as a company,” he said. “Everybody here – everything they do, every day, contributes directly or indirectly to helping cancer patients get better treatments and better outcomes. This celebration is for all of us.”
This 2026 King’s award was given in recognition of the invention of MapRT, which uses surface guided radiation therapy (SGRT) to improve treatment planning.
Since its launch in 2025, MapRT has been ordered by more than 50 cancer centers for X-Ray treatment planning, and its use has also recently been validated for proton therapy.
Thomas Carter, Vision RT’s VP for Marketing spoke about the impact this innovation has started to make in cancer treatments. “With MapRT, we’re better able to target tumors in RT planning, while avoiding critical structures and organs,” he said.
“This is a product that saves lives,” added Dr Smith.
MapRT has been shown to improve plans for around 20% of all radiotherapy cancer patients1 and reduce radiation to nearby healthy organs especially for lung, head, neck and breast cancer patients.1-3
Vision RT’s first royal award for innovation was for AlignRT, in 2016: AlignRT is used to monitor radiotherapy patient motion and ensure treatments are safe in real time. More than 3,500 AlignRT systems are in active clinical use around the world. While MapRT is at an earlier stage of adoption, it is now installed in or sold to 50 centers worldwide.
