MapRT is Now Available for Proton Therapy Systems, Expanding Safe and Efficient Treatment Planning

Vision RT is pleased to announce that MapRT is now available for use on all proton therapy gantries, enabling a significant advance in treatment planning for proton therapy centres worldwide. In photon treatment, MapRT has been shown to make advanced and non-coplanar planning simple and safe1,2,3 .

In addition to MapRT photon benefits, MapRT for proton therapy enables planners to minimize air gaps and optimize snout positioning safely, thereby supporting more precise dose delivery while sparing surrounding organs. MapRT removes the requirement for dry runs, by ensuring collision-free plans with automated virtual clearance checks.

MapRT is a two-camera solution that maps all safe beam and arc angles to support improved treatment planning. By identifying collision-free beam paths before planning begins, MapRT enables clinicians to enhance plan quality, reduce uncertainty, and confidently implement complex non-coplanar treatment strategies.

MapRT’s expansion into proton therapy reflects our commitment to giving clinicians greater confidence and control in even the most complex treatment environments,” said Vision RT CEO Dr Norman Smith. “This is an important step in advancing how proton therapy is planned and delivered.”

Its first application in proton environments has been validated by Oslo University Hospital with the ProBeam 360 proton system.

Delivering Unique Advantages for Proton Therapy

The complexity of proton therapy demands high levels of precision, safety, and efficiency. MapRT introduces key advantages that help clinics get more from their systems:

  • Plan with confidence: Clinicians can optimize beam and arc selection for improved plan quality and deliverability.
  • Improve dose distribution while protecting healthy tissue: By enabling planners to minimize air gaps and optimize snout positioning safely, MapRT supports more precise dose delivery while sparing surrounding organs.
  • Eliminate the need for physical clearance checks: MapRT removes the requirement for dry runs, by ensuring collision-free plans with automated virtual clearance checks.

MapRT has been ordered by nearly 50 clinics worldwide. The latest version, 1.3, features proton plan import and spatial check of MapRT patient surface against CT scan.

About Vision RT:

Vision RT is the inventor of Surface Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT) which uses camera systems to track surface data, to offer more guidance across every step of the radiotherapy workflow: simulation, planning, treatment and dose visualisation. We work tirelessly to improve the accuracy, efficiency, safety and comfort of radiation therapy. Vision RT is part of the William Demant Invest (WDI) family, a leading Danish Medtech investor with a long-term investment perspective. The companies in WDI employ more than 21,000 people.
