IntelliRad Pietermaritzburg Cancer Center Adopts Vision RT’s AlignRT InBore for Enhanced Cancer Care
One year after opening, IntelliRad Pietermaritzburg Cancer Center reflects on its decision to implement Vision RT’s AlignRT InBore, a dedicated SGRT solution for bore-based linacs. The system enables 6DoF intra-fraction monitoring & enhanced treatment accuracy, safety and workflow.
Why AlignRT InBore?
AlignRT InBore is a dedicated SGRT solution for bore-based linacs that tracks a patient’s position before and during radiation therapy with sub-millimetric accuracy. This combines the benefits of ceiling-mounted AlignRT cameras for patient setup, with an innovative, miniaturized SGRT ring camera system mounted within the bore, to eliminate shadowing during treatment.
For IntelliRad, situated at St Annes Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, the decision to adopt AlignRT InBore was driven by its potential to revolutionize their approach to cancer treatment, especially around breast cancer care.
AlignRT InBore’s precision is crucial for IntelliRad’s focus on breast cancer care, where the need for accurate treatment is paramount. Dr. Hasinah Asmal highlights the increasing prevalence of breast cancer in younger women and the importance of reducing radiotherapy-induced toxicities, especially for left-sided breast cancers. Techniques like Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH), combined with AlignRT InBore, help reduce cardiac risks during treatment.
Improving Treatment and Patient Comfort
Dr. Cullis, a Clinical Oncologist at IntelliRad Pietermaritzburg with over 20 years’ experience shared, “For most of our breast cancer patients we provide a new standard of treatment called hypofractioned radiation treatment, this is where the total dose of radiation is divided into larger doses per fraction, resulting in fewer fractions and shorter overall treatment time. Ensuring accurate delivery during this treatment is critical for our patients, that is one of the reasons we have invested in the AlignRT InBore patient monitoring technology.”
Additionally, AlignRT InBore can eliminate the need for permanent tattoo markings, enhancing patient comfort and experience. “The potential for having absence of tattoos is very advantageous for particularly breast cancer patients. It is certainly a long-term reminder of what they’ve been through, and it is just an invasive process. So, if we can avoid tattoos, I think that’s ideal.”
The adoption of AlignRT InBore reinforces IntelliRad Pietermaritzburg’s commitment to safer, more precise cancer treatments, setting new standards in patient care.
