Vision RT CEO Dr. Norman Smith elected Fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering
Vision RT CEO Dr Norman Smith is among fifty-three leading engineers from the UK and around the world elected today as Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
Fellows are recognized for their outstanding and continuing contributions to the profession, joining the Academy in its mission “to use the power of engineering to build a sustainable society and create an inclusive economy that works for everyone.”
“I feel very humbled to be elected as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering,” said Dr Smith. “This honour is in recognition of the achievements of Vision RT and would not have been possible without the exceptional contributions of my co-founders and colleagues. Through close collaboration with leading clinics around the world, we have pioneered Surface Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT). This allows patients to receive safer, more accurate, efficient and comfortable radiotherapy cancer treatment.”
SGRT uses proprietary 3D stereo camera units and novel software algorithms to monitor a patient’s skin surface in real-time and compare it to the ideal position with sub-millimetric accuracy. This ensures that radiation is delivered only when a patient is correctly positioned. The technology is non-invasive and completely non-contact, an increasingly important advantage for cancer patients, who often have weakened immune systems.
AlignRT, Vision RT’s flagship product, is being used by nine of the ten “Best Hospitals for Cancer” in the US according to the latest analysis by U.S. News and World Report.
All the new Fellows will be formally admitted to Fellowship at the Academy’s online AGM on Tuesday 22 September, and will add their expertise to a Fellowship of almost 1,600 eminent engineers from both industry and academia.
