Darmstadt Clinic goes tattoo and mark-free

The Darmstadt Clinic in Germany has announced that they are a tattoo and mark-free radiation therapy centre.

“AlignRT is entirely non-invasive and relies on thousands of points of light to guide the therapy,” says Professor Dr. Christian Weiß. “We are really pleased because this system not only increases treatment safety, but also provides more overall comfort for our patients.”

Traditional radiation therapy requires patients to receive small, often permanent tattoos on their skin to help the radiation therapist position them for treatment. Using AlignRT, the Darmstadt Clinic was able to join a growing number of radiation oncology centres around the world offering tattoo and mark-free treatments.

“Combining mark-free treatment with the latest accelerator technology and real-time patient monitoring, we feel that we can offer our patients the very best treatment available, with the highest safety standards. This benefits our patients and our clinic,” says medical director Professor Dr. Nawid Khaladj.

SGRT, pioneered by Vision RT, uses proprietary 3D stereo camera units to monitor a patient’s skin surface in real-time and compare it to the ideal position with sub-millimetric accuracy. This ensures that radiation is delivered only when a patient is correctly positioned, enhancing safety and comfort. AlignRT is non-invasive and completely non-contact, an increasingly important advantage for cancer patients, who often have weakened immune systems.
